  19. A MID-AIR MYSTERY

  21.      UFOS -- now there's a topic to tickle the imagination.
  22.      Galactic  tales of flying saucers inhabited by little  green
  23. critters have been the source of both intrigue and ridicule.
  24.      Believers argue it's ludicrous to suggest earthlings are the
  25. only  life  form  in the universe to have discovered the  art  of
  26. space travel.
  27.      But   cynics  claim  UFO  sightings  seem  to  be  made   by
  28. hillbillies  in  the middle of nowhere as opposed  to  university
  29. professors on the campus of Cambridge.
  30.      Whatever  your view,  there is the mysterious matter of  the
  31. 1978  disappearance of light aircraft pilot  Frederick  Valentich
  32. over Bass Strait.
  33.      His mid-air claims that a UFO had harassed him prompted such
  34. headlines as "Kidnaped by alien beings".
  35.      More than a decade later,  there is no trace of Valentich or
  36. his plane.
  37.      This   puzzling   story  is  recreated  in   a   fascinating
  38. documentary called Something Shining on SBS tonight at 7:30 p.m.
  39.      What started as a seemingly simple joy flight from Moorabbin
  40. to  King Island turned into a baffling case about which  everyone
  41. is quick to theorize.
  42.      The  fact  the Transport Department refused to  release  the
  43. tape  of  Valentich's  frantic last radio messages  adds  to  the
  44. drama.
  45.      But  it  has been revealed he said of the  alleged  hovering
  46. UFO:  "It seems to me he is playing some sort of game.
  47.      "He  is  flying over me,  two or three times,  at  speeds  I
  48. couldn't identify.
  49.      "What  I'm doing right now is orbiting and the thing is just
  50. orbiting on top of me...it's just vanished."
  51.      Interviews  with air officials and Valentich's family  don't
  52. shed light on what happened on the night of October 21, 1978.
  53.      "I don;t know what he saw,  but whatever he said he saw,  he
  54. saw," one said.
  55.      Is Valentich's disappearance a con job or did aliens  kidnap
  56. him?
  57.      ABC newsreader James Dibble sums up the special:
  58.      "I wonder if he had been taken by a UFO and had come back --
  59. would anyone believe him?"
